This camp was founded in 2014 by Sabrina DeVos. She volunteered many hours and continues to volunteer these hours each year to create this camp for both boys and girls, ages 7 - 16 with Celiac disease or have a gluten free diet. She also has a CIT program for ages 17. Their siblings or others are welcome to attend, but we adhere to a strict gluten free diet and do not allow food or gluten containing items be brought to camp. In 2017, we moved the location to Hunt, NY to Camp Cherith. We are not affiliated with their program, only rent their facility. Our camp is not religious-based. Our focus is to serve gluten-free food to allow the children to forget they have Celiac while they are at camp.
We are a dedicated gluten free camp and can accommodate a lactose free diet. We cannot accomodate any other allergies. Sabrina creates a safe and fun environment for the children. We play games, do crafts, create kits, swim and even get to eat s'mores as well as other yummy gluten free foods. We even send the campers home with a goodie bag as many venture from distant places. We have had campers from New York, North Carolina, Florida, Delaware, Connecticut, Maryland, New York City area, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Illinois, Canada and even as far west as California.
We host this camp for the children to be able to have a respite from their daily dietary stressors. We don't have any counseling or group support talks about gluten free. Camp allows the campers to take a break from all the thoughts they have every day outside of camp. Coming to this camp allows them to put their dietary fears aside and just be able to have fun, making new friends. The children are grateful and their happiness is what makes us continue.
Sabrina has created more than a camp, she has created a Celiac Strong Family. This camp is run strictly by volunteers - no one is paid. Please contact us if you would like to volunteer and become part of this wonderful family.
